Summertime is a fun season to relax, play and explore the sunny outdoors. But don't forget to set aside time to practice those important literacy skills learned throughout the school year. Here's 3 tips to help your kids enjoy summer break AND a good book:
1. Encourage reading outdoors. Pack a few books to enjoy around the campfire on your next camping trip. Don't forget the marshmallows!
2. Offer a selection of seasonal books. Books with summer-related themes (beach, seashells, vacations, etc.) will keep the spirit of summer alive, even on a quiet day at home. You can connect these books to outdoor experiences later. Example: Remember when we read that book about seashells? Let's see if we can find some at the beach today!
3. Do a summer reading challenge and make it fun! Think of a reasonable number of books that you would like for your child to read by the end of summer break (one book a day or 2 new books per week, for example). Keep track with a fun summer reading log. You can even offer a prize when the challenge is complete!
